But maybe it depends on how many people you are managing. The reason why this has never been a problem for me is that I am close to them, they have respect for me, trust me, and feel that they can confide in me. This has to be built up in time. I was once told by my managers to not be such close friends with my teams. However, I did not agree with this and am doing so still.
